Hello,

I am a sparkly new joinee as I am apparently now to call myself ..I ended up here as I had a chat with a friend on face book this morning about what a tough time of year it was for everyone and how if we managed to spread a little positivity amongst our friends it might make a difference. Somewhere at the back of my mind I remembered Danny Wallace's book and the ROk's which seemed so very appropriate especially now at this yuck time of year so here I am...please teach me all I need to know so I can spread a little happiness :D

Hi Charley :) Nice to see you here!

I don't think you need teaching anything! If you want some RAoK inspiration check out the threads in the RAoK part of the forum - there are some sticky threads there with loads of ideas for different budgets and stuff!

Where abouts in the country are you? There are loads of us spread around so I am sure you won't be the only joinee in your area! I'm in Leeds ;)

ETA: Forgot to ask, would you like a cuppa? I also have biscuits if you fancy one?

I am in Calderdale nr Halifax , but not from here originally, at heart I am a soft southerner from the Norfolk coast , but have been here for about nine years.

Thanks for the welcome, I have been trawling through the RAoK forum and found some good ideas although I guess sometimes you don't realise what you probably do already so it was good to be reminded and to get some fresh inspiration.

At Halloween my daughter wanted to dress up and trick or treat, we didn't really want her to so we turned it around a bit and she dressed up as a mad fairy with her friends and they gave out bags of sweets to all our neighbourhood with a little note in saying "no tricks just a treat for you"...talk about befuddled, many had no clue what was going on ,but loads loved it so I think we'll have to keep up the tradition and invent some more :)

We did have some talk of the idea of reverse Trick or Treating one year, but I don't think anything came of it. This sounds a really fun idea, though.

Hello, and welcome, by the way. I come from the Norfolk coast too, though I have lived in Leicestershire for 34 years now! Mum White.

Kat bod and Mum White, glad you liked our halloween idea, tbh we nicked from a friend who's brave son did it in London last year, pretty big deal for a then pre teen lad. It was particularly lovely because so many older folk have been freaked out by the whole trick or treat thing and we wanted to give them a nice taste in their mouth ..well hopefully.

It's weird because when I moved from London up to Yorkshire 9 years ago now I thought people were so much more friendly , but I think everywhere people have become so suspicious due to being ripped off or duped...time to set things the right way up again me thinks

Am branching out..spreading my wings, shedding my stabilisers well nearly. I have moved onto the RAoK thread and have bought the book so know I actually know what the hurray for gallus thread is about

I dropped off a bag with food and loo rolls etc in today to a food drop in centre they make up packages each week for people on low incomes of all the essentials and a few extras too.

Also am thinking this whole baking thing is the way forward..everyone loves baked goodies don't they, but am just wondering the best way to deliver them randomly..any hints??

Baking is ALWAYS the way forward. ;)

How about delivering them to a charity shop? Me and HBR did that one time. They were very pleased and it's a nice way to say thank you to people who spend their time supporting a charity that you believe in.

Thanks Poobah sounds like a lovely idea, great way to say thanks... I was just trying to do it in a more discreet way and that's tricky when it comes to edible things I guess.

Hmmm yes... it's tricky to try and do it in a way that people will trust, when it comes to food.

You could just try the 'leave it and run' approach in the shop, that I tend to find works well. It's utterly terrifying if you're shy about that kind of stuff, but in a good way. Maybe write a note explaining (it doesn't have to go into the whole Join Me thing, it could just be a vague but friendly 'I think you do a wonderful job and wanted to say thank you. Keep up the good work! Happy Friday!').. walk into the shop, put the baked goodies and the note down on the counter, say 'this is for you!' and then get the hell out of there as quickly as you can!

Actually, this is quite a good strategy because if you put it down on the counter (or whatever you would call it where the till is), they can't refuse to take it. Because by the time they realise you've given them something, you're out the door.

If you feel brave then you could stop and chat to them and tell them in person what you're up to. They will think you're strange, but in a nice way.

Gosh, I write as if I do this every day. I don't. I have been RUBBISH at RAOKs recently, especially ones like these. I should start making a little bit more effort again...

I definitely prefer a 'drop and run' approach! :D

How about baking some treats for homeless people / big issue sellers etc?

They have you now Charley! There is no escape you know! I haven't been on the forum in months, possibly a year or more, not sure, yet I get a text message while in the supermarket telling me someone from Halifax has joined (I'm in Halifax) and to come say hello... it's almost like a cult or something they way they won't let you go haha :)

Anyway, Hello, Welcome to Join me. Have fun, you'll make some fantastic friends here. Ones who still text harrass you after several years :-)

Incidentally my favourite ever Raok was when I bought a bunch of flowers, drove round till I saw someone, an old lady walking along with a little girl. I pulled up and wound the window down and gave her the flowers. She was smiling from ear to ear and said 'but why?' I said 'just to see you smile' and drove off.

omg I still have blonde hair in that photo. Must change that.
If you hear of something bad happening in Halifax... I did it!

Hellloooo..yes i must admit they paid me vast sums of money to lure you back ha ha

LOVE your flowers idea...that was very sweet

I do feel like a fish on a hook and now I am being reeled in, but I like it and everyone has been very friendly and inspirational x
