I am trying to gauge where people stand when it comes to communication.

Would you rather receive an email or a letter in the post? Tell me why.

I believe the postal system is dying. Small US post offices are being closed because there isn't enough mail generated to keep them running. (This really makes me sad. I love post.) Do you foresee hard copy ultimately being replaced by cyber communication in the future?

Interesting question.

Really, in a world where lack of communication seems to result in disasters of varying magnitude i believe all avenues of comunication should remain in place!
I often have to explain ( and generally to older people) that post office payment can take nearly 3 weeks to clear, this is not their fault, nor is it ours but it makes a massive impact to many people. frustratingly its still a valid way to pay but its so much easier using modern forms of communication

im digressing slightly, but my point is that because snail mail, while still valid is used less and less it seems to suffer.

I love old post. would hate to see it dissappear, but we may find one day that post offices are gone, and that letters will instead be handled by couriers!

I love nothing more than getting a real letter or card or postcard in the mail :)

It makes me smile :)

Emails and facebook messages and texts are nice - and I use them frequently to keep in touch with people, but the thought that goes into writing and sending actual post is so much nicer.

I would be sad if real post died out, but I don't think it will.

I agree with Sheli. I love real mail, both sending and receiving. Letters are just awesome, and I like to send parcels too.
Electronic communication has it's place too, though and I would not like to be without that either. It has certainly been my mainstay since my kids left home! It helps to maintain the lines of communication with friends who are not letter writers! Mum White xx

I like both. Letters/parcels are nice, but for simply staying in touch emails/social networking is awesome - and as someone who works alone from home I *really* appreciate them.

I generally like the post better, except for the mass-mailing junk adverts that (ironically) seem to be picking up some of the slack and generating hardcopy mail that is needed. My brother lives in one of those places that may be set for the ax, a hamlet of about 100 people near (well, 15 miles drive) from Crater Lake. Currently, he just has to walk over to the small post office in town to get mail. The next-nearest PO is 10 or 15 miles away, in another direction. That's not very convenient for a lot of folks.

In communication class today we learned:

It took radio broadcasters 38 years to reach an audience of 50 million, television 13 years, and the Internet just four."
The internet not only allows ease of communication, it is readily available to most people and costs next to nothing. It is awesome indeed.
However, I am still a vocal proponant of snail mail and will always try harder to "post" something than to "post something on the web".
I am a Technology Troglodyte. Unashamedly so.

We do live in times where electronic communication is growing exponentially. I am running, scrambling, grasping in an effort to catch up!

I will prove my point by posting a note to all of you. Well, not Doug. He hasn't shared an address. If you are willing to do so, Doug, I'll send a REAL PURDY card yer way. ;) One week compared to seconds. Email has provided sustantial improvement in transmission time.

Posted mail is extra-special. I am rubbish at sending it but always really appreciate it when I get some. (Thank you Rachel for the lovely things you've sent in the past!) x
