We were discussing mixed metaphors in the office yesterday & here are a few of our favourites:

People in glass houses sink ships.

I wouldn't eat that with a 10ft barge pole.

Step up to the plate & put your cards on the table.

I'm watching you with a fine toothed comb.

Burning the midnight oil from both ends.

People are dropping like hotcakes.

Anyone have any other good ones?
CHEESE AND WIIIIIIINE!!!

Those are great!

One of my favourites is:
Is the bear a Catholic? or Do popes shit in the woods?

I've always enjoyed Dundrearyisms; I had always thought of them as "C.J.-ism"s (from the 'Reginald Perrin' series) until I stumbled upon the actual name when I was looking up something about "Our American Cousin" (killer play, incidentally). My favorite example is
"That's a whole different kettle of fish out of water".

Yes I particularly like saying "that's a whole different kettle of worms" or "that's really let the fish out of the bag" and suchlike.

Bad guy: "Does a bear shop in the woods?"
Mountie: (very seriously) "In my experience, bears don't shop."

I know that doesn't really quite fit into this thread. But tough. It's out there now. Because that line always makes me smile.

Lou! I forgot to tell you.... David of the Joneseseses went as Benton Fraser to fancy dress party on new year's eve, the theme of which was "Your personal hero". Thought you might like that, although it's not CKR...Sorry.

I am being dastardly at the moment, with all this off-topic malarkey! Wow... I didn't know I could type in such such a camp fashion.

Anyway.

All this reminds me of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace!!

"That's about the size of it in a nutshell"

"Do you understand?"
"As Crystal."

:D Oh what fun!

What about:

The Iceberg that broke the camel's back.
Hernaic (Hur-nay-ick) [adj]: Relating to any object, event or experience that is sufficiently interesting, entertaining, amusing and/or extreme to the point of induction of a hernia (fig).

Um ... these are proverbs, not metaphors - just saying. They are delightfully mixed, though :) Mum White.

Most of them are both, but not all of them are proverbs. Lacking the all important advice or warning element. More specifically than metaphors though, they are all catachreses, if we're defining them perfectly. Some of them are even solecist proverbial catachreses. But a lot more people know what a metaphor is.
