They say to use it on quite a few of my American craft sites. I tried looking on the hobbycraft website, and they sell ModPodge glitter. Thats not really what I want. (Dont really want glitter.) Any idea what Mod Podge actually is, and if there is an alternative thing I could use instead??? Could it be the same thing as PVA mixed with water???? Thanks!!!! Xxx

I just googled it & found out straight away. It's a combined craft glue & sealant. Or a decoupage glue if you're being technical & it's often used as a synonym for any kind of craft sealant. It doesn't have to be glitter. Though the suggestion seems to be that this is most common.
Personally I can't imagine any attractive sealant serving as a decent glue, since it wouldn't be able to bond with a connected substance without making a mess of it... so my gut reaction is to think it's shit. But I don't really know.

PVA mixed with water will make a fairly weak sealant if that's what your after, but it'll be glossy obviously, whereas you can get proper sealants that are much stronger & with a matt finish if that's what you want... Or glitter, it seems.

In the 1990s, it was known as "Maude Podge", the Flanders matriarch's breakfast specialty. She believed in a balanced diet, and so added both oysters and saltpeter to Ned's, Rod's and Todd's morning mush. These were intended to cancel out each other and so eliminate the boys' libidos, acting as an anti-aphrodisiac.

It is a sealant. Very popular during the hippie era. People would take those big industrial spools, paste their favorite pics on top and then seal the surface with the stuff. If you put an icy glass on it there'll be a nasty ring each time from the condensation. What do you want to use it for, Alexandra? That's the starting point.

Those are nice, Alexandra. I would think you could use any craft glue to attach paper to a jar lid. I've noticed while crating that some papers pucker and I would try the paper/glue combination on something else before crafting the lids. You must be filling the jars with something wonderful to give as Christmas gifts. I did that with hot chocolate one year but bought Mason jars and did the lids differently.

Is it possible that these are American sites or crafters and are only using the words "Mod Podge" because it's a familiar name that is highly recognized (here, apparently) among crafters? Like the same way in which someone asks for a Kleenex, they don't reject it if you hand them a store-brand tissue. Would a British site or crafter call it 'PVA' instead of "mod podge"?

I was going to make some sweeties to put in them. I was going to make some chocolates and peppermint creams, but Ive never made peppermint creams before and I dont really have the space to roll mixture out so gave up on that idea. I then just did the chocolates, but the moulds have used up sooooooooooo much more chocolate than I thought - even with nuts added to the chocolate!!! So Ive decided this is just going to be a gift for my nan and (step) grandad - rather than lots of jars for quite a few people.
Also decided to just put a circle of funky fabric over the jar lid and tie it with ribbon, adding a cute tag :)

My handmade gifts idea this year really hasnt gone to plan. Its put a lot of stress on me through December. If I decide to do handmade gifts for Christmas next year, I'm starting in June!!!! Xxx

Rachel, when you did hot chocolate for people in jars, what did you put in them - apart from hot chocolate of course :) And I'm guessing marshmallows??? I love this idea!!!! Xxxx

Hey, you! :) Checking in quickly. This hectic lifestyle really is one I need to adjust to. I understand starting handmade Christmas gifts in June, Alexandra. ;)

The ornaments and cushions are charming. Good job! I love Fenella's artwork!

The jars I made had a layer of sugar, cocoa, powdered creamer, mini chocolate chips and mini marshmallows. Some of them even got a layer of mini M & Ms for fun. Plus I tied a chocolate dipped spoon to the side of each jar for stirring.

Sort of like this: Posted Image

They were pretty. I've done cookie mixes before, too. And sweet spiced orange tea. That one you can tie cinnamon honey sticks to. It's good!

I'll send you recipes if you want any. Just let me know. xoxoxo
