This has been (inexplicably) bothering me for DAYS. I was convinced with was a Michael J Fox film, but have looked him up on IMDB and have found nothing.
The film starts out with a creepy looking guy sitting in a room, then pans in to a close up shot of his hand, where there is some sort of device pumping blood for him IN HIS HAND.
So the creepy guy turns out to be a vampire, and not-MJF is a high school kid who has his suspicions the guy is a bit odd. Then not-MJFs mum starts dating the guy. There's a similar sort of exchange to that scene in Lost Boys here Edward Herrmann's character turns up, and Michael has to invite him in.
Anyways, I need to know I'm not a total nutter and this film actually exists!

Sounds a lot like the new fright night (which is crap bdw). I've not seen the original though but it could be that.

I thought the same.... but I've seen neither version - not the modern one nor the 1985 original (which I'm guessing is what we're talking about)
So, yeah, not much help there I guess
Did it look like this?
Man... it looks AMAZING. I'm totally going to be watching that
