So within a couple of hours of the welcome back package appearing on the playstation store, ive ammassed a heap of downloads! if you havent seen it already , get on there and download it as it gives you 2 free games, a 30 day pass to playstation plus and though they didnt seem to mention it, 3 free films to download.

what does everyone think of this? im pretty impressed to be honest, i wasnt interested in the games that much but once i'd had a look at playstation plus i was definatly impressed!

ive gone for , ratchet and clank, and dead nation. ive also downloaded an animated resident evil film and burnout paradise!

its taken nearly 2 days to download it all :D

I went with LBP and Wipeout.

Where do you get the free films? Do you have to sign up for PS+ to get that?

I got Wipeout & Infamous (I already have LBP).
Not really interested in any of the + stuff to be honest, I already have most of the 30 day trial games, get my movies elsewhere & the discounts weren't that impressive. I did like all the free themese though.

The really good thing about all of this, for me, is that hopefully it's all more secure & no personal info will get pinched in the future & that in light of it some of the dev's might drop the stupid always-online DRM now.

First answer. You're welcome :)

Me and Anna got all bar LBP between us (two accounts good). Wipeout is great fun, haven't tried the rest yet.

As for plus, I had it pre breakdown and it's been ok. Discounts are nice, and I got Stacking for free, and considering it's short, I won't miss it when it goes if I discontinue it. Each to their own, anyway.

See, downloading stuff is all well and good, but despite clearing loads off the hard drive when I downloaded Wipeout Fusion before the crash, I'm not sure I've got the room to download megs and megs of games and films... boo...

Wipeout and Ratchet & Clank for me. Infamous is bloody excellent - if you've never played it, it's definitely the one to go for.

@Wilf... just check what hard drive space you have left in settings, and if you need more space go to the "game data utility" folder on the games tab, and delete any game there you dont play anymore.

Awesome. Even though you've already said "you're welcome", thank you anyway! ;)

That's pretty stupidly broken though. Sony don't really seem to have picked up the ball after dropping it... hmm.

Will probably download Infamous, not sure about the others, I already own the ones I like :)

How big is the download? I really need to get a bigger drive.

You can get a 640gb drive for £40 from Amazon & the switch over is a piece of cake.

640gb for £40 is a pretty good deal, still thinking about one of these though... http://www.ebuyer.com/product/192247

Couldn't possibly fill 1tb with just games*. You can get a 640gb internal & a 1tb external drive to plug into one fo the usb's for media storage for £40 each. More space, less money.

*Couldn't fill 640gb for that matter, or even 250gb. But it's the best £/gb ratio.

Here's a Samsung one.

I got this one from Seagate; bit less space but I had issues with the Samsung one, so needed an alternate, and as the hard drives that come with the machine are Seagate, I went with that,

And here's a guide on how to change them over

So, Wipeout - surprisingly dull. Back in the PS1 days the whole ultra-futuristic thing was pretty cool. Now it seems utterly lifeless and sterile.

Well, that worked well...i.e not at all.

Upon putting the new drive in, it complains that I've not got the latest update (I have - 3.66), and asks to connect storage media that has the update data on it. I've tried the shiny new 1Tb (partitioned to 32Gb) external hard drive I bought, won't recognise it, I've tried a memory stick, formatted to FAT32, with the correct update file on it...doesn't recognise it.

Back to a measly 60Gb then, I guess.

With the big drive, the problem might be the partitioning. They removed the ability to "install other operating systems" (i.e. Linux) by simply killing the ability to use any extra partitions on the main drive. Maybe a glitch means the partitioning of the external media is triggering the same kind of security lockout?

As for the update, have you got the folder structure?

Quote

Before starting, use your PC to create a folder named 'PS3' on the storage media or USB device. Within the folder, create a folder named 'UPDATE' (This folder name is case sensitive and must appear in all capital letters). Once the UPDATE folder has been created, download the PS3 system software update to this location.

K, that is EXACTLY the piece of information I've been missing - had the UPDATE folder but didn't know it needed the PS3 folder as well. Will try it when I get home.
