The new Doctor Who

For all Stephen Moffat's grand arc storylines, at least he doesn't have weird dead-ends floating around like that.

Anyone else think this was naval-gazing, indulgent drivel that completely wasted another episode of this series? I was desperately bored of it after 15 minutes.
As bad as Let's Kill Hitler. And the pirate episode. Gutted there's been 3 rubbish shows in this series, 2 was forgivable but 3 is pushing it.
Still, next week's look like it should be another top one!

On the contrary, I though it was absolutely brilliant, very close to The Doctor's Wife in quality, though not quite (that episode is one of New-Who's best).

It was superb storytelling, made complete sense both within itself, and the greater context of the relationships set up by the last couple of seasons, and also allowed yet more insight into Amy and Rory's relationship, which is always a treat.
I agree with Gaz, it's one of the best episodes of Nu-Who, which looked awesome from the preview, and lived up to itself.
Also, even old Amy is awesome hot.

Also, having the robots repeat "this is a kindness" was a nice touch given how it ended. Though my favourite new Who episode is still Vincent and The Doctor, so I clearly go for the human angle ones...

Vincent is my favourite episode of the new run too. I had many things in my eye for that one.

11 (incumbent) - Matt Smith
10 - David Tennant
9 - Christopher Eccleston
8 - Paul McGann
7 - Sylvester McCoy (how is he not any older???)
6 - Samuel West (Colin Baker - who seems to have aged for himself and Sylvester McCoy - looks older than Tom Baker now, so he's no good!)
5 - Peter Davison (can pull it off with a bit of make-up)
4 - Tom Baker (just needs a wig - has always had a face like a manic bulldog anyway) or, if he declines, Benedict Cumberbatch (assuming they don't line him up to play Doctor no. 12)
3 - Sean Pertwee (looks enough like his dad to pull it off)
2 - Martin Freeman (bit of a push, but can't think of anyone who looks more like Patrick Troughton)
1 - Bill Nighy (bit of flour in his hair and Bill Hartnell could be back from the grave!)
Any other suggestions?

I thought I'd say something nice about that, because I have nothing nice to say about the latest episode except maybe about Amy's ageing make-up. Dull dull dull plus a missed opportunity to remind everyone a bit more of how long Rory had to wait when he was being a Centurion.

The only saving grace so far has been the girl who waited but even that felt very rehashed as they have already done the waiting thing no less than 4 times by my count.
I keep hoping and praying with each episode it will get better but I fear it may have peaked already.

Night Terrors I thought was hugely unoriginal and very dull.
The Girl Who Waited was better, but I'm really surprised at how much some people here seem to have liked it. There were some utterly ridiculous bits in there and it was overly sentimental to the point of being cringeworthy.
The Hell Hotel I thought was a massive missed opportunity. It had some great bits and even better lines, but overall I don't feel the concept was given enough foundation to hold up with what was there. Also it felt like they shoehorned in some more sentimental stuff. I just didn't feel like the episode could decide which way to go so it didn't really satisfy.
Can't comment on what;s to come as I never watch the teasers for the next episode.

As for them not looking for their daughter anymore, I think there's a realisation now that if they got her back then everything that's happened will unravel but it's been cunningly written with the Mels character that even though they didn't bring her up they still got to see her grow up. I am still intrigued as to how it will all tie up though. And in the meantime, cybermen!

People keep mentioning about Rory and Amy and the time spent of them as characters... Am I the only one who couldn't give a monkeys about their stories? I simply get totally bored when it's focused on them. They're dull. And I don't care for the object of trying to look into how it feels for a normal person to be taken out of their normal life and all the emotions/guilt that may provoke in a zzzzzzzz what? is The Doctor doing something fun or exciting yet?!

Good gracious this series has been awful in my opinion! Who is writing this stuff?! Where did all this sentimental nonsense come from? Talk about filler. If you ignore the last 2 minutes of the episode, i.e. the part that had nothing whatsoever to do with the episode itself, it was at best utterly average.
When I compare this series to the last, and to so so so many of the later Tennant episodes... well there simply isn't any comparison in my opinion. The series needs to seriously buck up its ideas if you ask me.

Agree with this entirely, after reading how great people thought it was I was really excited. It's basically a partially recycled story from previous series... ooh bad monsters are living in a department store.. hang on didn't that happen to Rose when Mr Ecclestone was around?
Next weeks does look good though and as I've invested so much time into this series I'm going to keep on with it...

My goodness. Those last two minutes. Talk about afterthought! They could have been the trailer for another tv show altogether for the amount of continuity it had with this week’s episode. What a horrible way to end!

But the later Tennant episodes were almost all awful kitchen sinkism as RTD went for broke and made things increasingly more preposterous. The end of series nonsense with the Daleks stealing planets and a massive, massive waste of Davros - probably done because RTD admits hating the character - was ridiculous (as was having about 8 companions and 3 doctors), the steam-powered giant cyberman xmas special (with yet ANOTHER doctor) was diabolically bad, the one with the water creatures on Mars actually had the Doctor turn into a massive, unlikeable arse by the end of it, and then the end of Tennant's run was basically a 3-hour show-off session for the producer with John Simm and Timothy Dalton both wasted on a plot that seemed to revolve around throwing a special diamond into space. The only high spots were Bernard Cribbins and a massive sense of relief when Matt Smith appeared and you knew RTDs run was over.
I find it interesting that people are really split on this season despite some corking episodes, but there's no WAY anything has been remotely as bad as the guy who turned into a giant wasp, or this leftover from Rentaghost:

a. The cybermen being destroyed by love; and
b. Why the HELL were they converting Corden by simply putting a metal suit on him? What happened to cutting his brain out of his body?
Oh no, wait, that would have made him unsaveable.

a. I don't get the "they were destroyed by love" thing when in the actual episode the Doctor explained it was feedback from emotions etc and stops explaining because it's overly complex - destroyed by love is just the way he described it to James Corden's character.
b. The cutting was coming next - it's been established for a while that for the sake of speed and in circumstances where materials are in short supply, cybermen will partially convert people temporarily with external parts and fully convert them later

Obviously there's no information to be had yet other than that it's a plan. But thoughts? Theories?
Personally I think it could be good if they try & tie it into the series, i.e: Matt Smith (or whoever may take over) plays the Doctor. They could go different directions with companions, tone etc. But the canon is so vaste that it would be reckless not to draw on it & the potential for fan backlash if it's a standalone are huge.
I'm not opposed to the idea yet though.

It's that last bit that worries me. I don't want another 'origins' film - sick and tired of them in superhero movies already, while a whole new Doctor Who timeline would just be ridiculous.
But hey, there's no actual information on the thing yet, so it might end up different.

Worst case scenario: Jim Carrey in a curly wig and long, sponsorship-covered scarf doing a reimagining of Genesis of the Daleks, with Ben Kingsley as Davros and a pink female Dalek who the Doctor (now known as "Doc") seduces to save the day. Also, The Tardis is now a talking sports car and the sonci screwdriver is a baseball bat.

She was a tolerably good actress in Emmerdale.
