Friday daytime goings-on Who wants to do something?

Poll: Friday options (19 member(s) have cast votes)

Which would you prefer to do on Friday daytime?

  1. Lunch somewhere S Ken-ish ( Polish sounds good, but we could pick anywhere else depending on what people want), then museum (Dinosaurs at Nat History (rah!) or button-pushing at the Science museum get my vote). (16 votes [84.21%])

    Percentage of vote: 84.21%

  2. Tea at St Pauls, followed by London Walk (TBC), then swish bar. (3 votes [15.79%])

    Percentage of vote: 15.79%

Hello. Who wants to do something during the day on Friday?

I'll be down earlier in the week for work and am taking off the Friday, and while I see there's some ice-skating going on at night, I'm not aware of anything during the day.

I've not been in London for ages (apart from Heathrow airport!) and really fancy doing something quiet and stressfree, perhaps ambling around some interesting and lesser-spotted bits of London with a camera, or maybe museuming (which to my shame I've never done there).

Anyone fancy joining me, being a bit of a guide, or just keeping me company?

Man, that makes me sound like I have no mates or something!

I wish I could (I love museuming) and would really enjoy your company too but I have so little leave left before my job ends that I cannot :(

I can find recommendations if you would like though.

No worries - see you on the Saturday instead, or the Friday night!

If I am stuck for ideas, I'll prod you for recommendations. So to speak.

I won't be there by then, sadly. I'll be cutting it close just to get to the ice-skating on time. I'm being cheeky and not taking the day off work even though I'll have to leave at about lunchtime, which is when I usually arrive!

That's very diligent of you (working on Friday, not turning up at lunchtime each day!). Safe flight over!

Great stuff. A friend of mine went to the Natural History Museum recently. Or so he thought. He was intrigued by the lack of dinosaurs and the plethora of machinery and gadgets, then he realised he'd actually been in the Science Museum next door!

Let's make plans then.

My work schedule is so higgledy piggledy and last minute I won't be able to tell you until that week, however I'm certainly up for some South Ken Museum action.

I think I'm around then, and I'm up for some nice easy stroll around type stuff. Particularly museums - not been since I was at school when we seemed to go every other week.

I can also reccommend the V&A - I went when I was at school, expecting it to be naff, but it was actually pretty amazing.

One thing I'd really recommend if you can get hold of a copy of the Time Out guide to London City Walks is to do the London wall walk - it's a particularly good one, and passes by the Museum of London, the Postman's Park Memorial Wall (aka the wall of unfortunate deaths of yesteryear), the Barber Surgeon's secret herb garden and loads of other genuinely fascinating stuff you'd never know was there.

If you can't find a copy, this: http://www.londongar...guides/city.htm takes in an awful lot of the same places (but is a bit garden-themed!)

You've read my mind! Two of you!

I was going to suggest one of the London Walks for the Friday afternoon. There are lots that start / end nearish the skating and they're great value. We could meet up for lunch first, depending on which we went for.

Sherlock Holmes sounds good!

I'm up for museuming too though if that gets the vote!

I am ambivalent about the idea of museums or walks... could we do both?

The idea of lunch beforehand, however, is something about which I am entirely bivalent.

I'd love to suggest/organise something, but I am afraid I really don't have the knowledge, and frankly as long as I get to eat, chill out, see stuff, and talk to nice people, I'm not too fussed.

Does someone want to suggest a meeting time/place/dimension/goat?

Edited to add: I mean I'm ambivalent about the choice between museums or walks... the idea of each is great!

The Polish restaurant I mentioned way up there ^^^^ could be a good starting point if you are going museuming. Cheap hearty filling tasty food. Which considering how expensive some of the places round there are is a great accomplishment.

The idea of going there almost makes me want to take the day off owrk, even though i am saving the day or so I have left for my birthday!

Following a conversation - i was debating organising a trip to Tower 42 again. there's already a number of people on the list. However - i'll gauge interest now.

I'd quite fancy mooching about a museum - that'd be cool. Nothing too manic or planned, and west London would be perfect. And yes, lunch.

Just as an aside, if you're out and about and you like tea (as joinees tend to) then you might want to go to "Tea", which is a tea shop next to St Paul's Cathedral. It has about a million different types of tea, and is basically like a Starbucks but for tea and also nicer (than Starbucks).

Tea!

Right, so... we have a group of people, a vague plan, then:

- meet somewhere before lunch
- have said meal
- museum or walk
- er...
- that's it

All we need now is a meeting point.

Suggested itinerary (near to skating option):

12:30 Meet at Gaz's tea place

14:15 London Walk from St.Pauls

Walk Finish Time: Head to Tower 42 (?) to drink away the hours before heading off to the skating

Yay! I have the day off!

Lunch sounds like a fab idea and I would also love to see a museum or two. Not so sure about tower 42 though. Isn't that the place someone got refused last year for not wearing a tie? (Or am I making that up? )

*Brainwave*

Ok, here's an idea - I too am happy to go with the majority (the only reason I'm not a definite yet is because I need the holiday signed off), SO - SiVar - why don't you add a poll to this thread, so we can see what the majority vote actually is. Then we can make sure everybody gets a say (not just the more vocal people like me!), and then it's all cool either way. Does everyone think that's fair?

Option A Lunch somewhere S Ken-ish ( Polish sounds good, but we could pick anywhere else depending on what people want), then museum (Dinosaurs at Nat History (rah!) or button-pushing at the Science museum get my vote).

Option B Tea at St Pauls, followed by London Walk (TBC), then swish bar.

I love London walks and have done quite a few of them (although they can be a bit hit and miss depending on which guide you get on the day - generally good though), but given that I've got soaked through on the last two Fri-Ks because it pissed it down, the idea of definitely staying dry in a museum in the case of inclement weather sounds quite appealing. Also, a museum might be an easier place for any late-comers to join us mid-afternoon?

Either way, those seem to be the options on the table, so why don't we vote and decide that way?

H.

xx.

I agree with everything Holly's just said.

Unless after posting that post, she muttered out loud "Simon's a retard, and mushroom's are the nicest food ever", in which case I totally disagree with everything she's just said.

I'll add a poll, and start designing and printing my "vote option A" banners, leaflets and billboards.

Right, that's now 9-0 to option 1. What a landslide!

Safe to assume that's what will win, so let's go ahead with a roll-call.

No - and this year it will be dark as i'm looking to north, south, east and west for the pictures of London. May join you - but i'm certainly finishing at T42. Not enough interest for an "area" as yet - but i'll keep asking until i get enough or else i'll go by myself.

I'd still be keen on a more Easterly plan...closer to me and skating would be grand so it's not too long a day!

Looks like the currently-most-concrete plan is South Kensington for lunch and museuming.

I'm still keen to stay a little more local so up for tea place / London Walk / Tower 42 / Borough Market (from where we can easily bus to skating)...

I suggest the 'Pester The Patz' Faction.

Not that I'll be missing missing all the fun.
