Is there a definite kit list for what we should be carrying on the walk?I cannae find owt on the site.Just wanna start getting stuff.I know it may sound daft but if we get there and they say -'have you got??"-we'll end up looking like numpty's if we ain't got everything.
Also i need to keep everything as small and lightweight as possible due to dodgy shoulder.Which costs more.
Obviously it's waterproofs,warm clothing,boots,etc-but any special stuff i.e. compasses,stoves,etc

Wilf-what did you have to carry last year??

Just a reminder guys, that 6% of the value of any orders placed at GearZone or Cotswolds Outdoors will be donated to the 24 Peaks fund if you go via the links at the SwapShop (clicky here)

OK, here we go. As per last years list:

Individual Equipment

Clothing

Base layer - lifa/ACL/Dry Flo etc (one base layer per day really)
Mid Layer - fleece
Mid layer - suitable trousers (not jeans, and again, one pair per day would be good)
Outer layer - waterproof jacket
Outer layer - waterproof trousers
Hat/Sunhat
Gloves

Footwear
Walking boots with ankle support
Walking socks

Carrying
Rucksack or massive bum bag

Equipment
Waterbottle/camelbak/playtpus (each person will need AT LEAST 3 litres of water per day)
Food to eat during the walk
Torch (ideally a headtorch)

Team Equipment
Map x2
Compass x2
First aid kit including blister treatment e.g compeed
Whistle x2
Sunscreen
Insect repellent
Walking pole x2

For this year's walk, the only compulsory equipment id the ankle support for your boots. We'll need to start thinking about buying some stuff i.e First aid kits, maps etc.

Given the time of year and the swampy bits on the route, I suspect we'll need as much bug repellent as we can carry!

Gators/gaiters would I think be a good idea. Toward the end of the second day there is some seriously boggy ground to cover.

The route does follow prescribed footpaths, however for the most part, finding the path is pretty difficult. As long os the visibility is good, heading for the next peak is usually a simple excersise!

I have a reasonable comprehensive first aid kit - if we figure ourt what we *definitely* need, I'll check that against what I have and work out the extra bits we need - no point us all getting *everything* though I recommend that we ALL have our individual supplies of compeed/zinc oxide tape.

If anyone's not got a safety whistle and wants one which is absurdly effective at its job, http://www.fox40whis...sp?ProductID=1# is the bugger to go for. It's piercing, shrill (in a really brain-tormenting manner - it manages to be out-of-key with itself!), cannot be blown too hard, and works however wet you get it.

It is in my top 3 of "most random and inexplicable things I ever bought online". But, it's totally awesome.

Team equipment, with my comments:

Team Equipment

Map x2 - I have maps to cover day 1. Will check and see if it's still within date to get the 24 Peaks specific ones.

Compass x2 - i have one. Someone else needs to bring one. Martin?

First aid kit including blister treatment e.g compeed - I can buy a first aid kit. Suggest everyone buys their own compeed.

Whistle x2 - Havn't got one. Anyone else?

Sunscreen - BYO

Insect repellent - BYO (Scott, what was that crazy Scottish Midge repellent?)

Walking pole x2 - I think we have plenty. I have 2, and I think biddle wnats to get some too.

It's in 2 weeks time mate. We've got our team together and organised accomodation, registered ourselves, gone on mountain awareness days etc etc. We also decided against any new additions. Sorry!

For feet i have a recommendation of applying athletes foot powder (to your feet surprisingly ;) ) before you head out on the walk....its supposed to lessen the rubbage soreness apparently.

What size packs are people taking? I was going to take a very large rucksack but i'm thinking that as we can leave stuff in the minibus and only take stuff that we need for each day, we won't need to carry quite so much??

Take as small a bag as you can fit a day's stuff in. Consider that you'll need to carry:

3-4 litres of water
Food
Waterproofs (top+bottom)
Spare fleece
Head torch
etc etc.

Mine is a 35+8l bag, I have 2x 1l bottles and 1x 1l platypus.

Martin,

As you know - I have one the same as Wilf's, and obviously I won't be needing it this weekend after all (it also has that very handy airflow thingy going on so you don't get such a sweaty back, and is pretty light and the stringy-bits tighten it up quite small if you don't have much in it). Oh, it also has loops for your poles too. So, if you'd like to borrow it, let me know and I can probably get it to Wilf by tomorrow night, so he could take it for you?
