I've heard that Dublin is very quiet around the middle of March - the 17th to be exact.

Anyone?

More expensive and longer trip (~8 hours) from Liverpool but if you go at night, you get a cabin included in the price.
Meals included on day and night sailings
Alternatively, Holyhead offers fast-ferries (1hr 40 or so) but they don't run in bad weather.Normal cruise ferry is about 3hr 30 I think...

I sooo wanna go to Dublin I would be in heaven as cannot resist an irish accent!! but it would really depend on pennies and when, march is not so useful as tis my birthday and well unless you fancy giving me a plane ticket as my bday present I really should be near home for my mum's sake....

When are the other main meets held?
Karmageddon I know is in December, Brighton is July (?) and GGF is April
So it looks like May is fairly empty?
If so, I propose one of the May Bank Holidays or maybe early June?

Some advice needed from Meet planners and veteran attendees :D

For a one-day meet, how early do things generally kick off? What kind of activities generally take place?
I read in the book that there was a mass RAoK at K1 (or was it GGF1 ?) and I guess that still carries on?
What about evening festivities? Group meal? Group drinking? Group going-to-watch-a-gig?

And if it's a weekender, what time do things get going on the second day? Not too early, I guess :D
And wind up around mid-afternoon-ish?

I'm still thinking about this Dublin idea and am trying to get more info on the Viking Splash tour that Da Vinci mentioned

The textbook meet (by no means the ideal one) goes something along the lines of:
- meet around lunchtime somewhere prominent. Get someone to hold up a sign
- do lots of raoks
- go to the pub
- get some food somewhere. "Table for 54, please!"
- go back to the pub
- on the day after (assuming it's a Sunday), chill out in the park

You can't go that wrong with that formula, but it really depends on the location, what's happening in the area, numbers, interests, capable and knowledgeable local joinees, etc.

Good luck! Would love to consider hopping over.

OK - here's what I'm thinking. It's a long way to come to Dublin for a one-day meet plus I'll try and drum up some interest from the Irish media, so hopefully we'll get a decent crowd. So I thought a two-day might be better...

Saturday
Meet about 1 o'clock in St Stephens Green.
Disperse about 2 o'clock for some free hugging and mass RAoKage
Retire to pub about 4 o'clock
(or other touristy things like Book of Kells, Guinness Storehouse etc)
Grub about 7 o'clock
More pub or gig or something like that
Retire to chambers at about 2am (this *is* Dublin don't forget :D)

Sunday
Viking Splash tour about 12 o'clock
Leave for home about 3 o'clock-ish

How does that sound to peoples? Any other thoughts?
Viking Splash can be done in the evening if we'd prefer?

I'd definately be up for a Dublin meet, I'd have to walk about 15 mins to get to Stephen's Green :)

The splash tour is very good and I'd highly recommend it.

There are loads of bars, a number of them are huge all arounds Stephen's green and temple bar so we would have loads to choose from.

Del,

I'm happy to help out with organising if you'd like a hand.

At the moment, I'm thinking May Day Bank Holiday...to give people some recovery time before going back to work :D

[Edit] Just checked an that would be Sat 5th to Mon 7th of May. Does that clash with any other Joinee events (GGF etc)?

August BH no good for me, but I'm only one!

However, might be better to avoid a BH weekend or school holidays to make sure there are cheaper flights available?

Here's an arbitary suggestion:

Weekend of 30 Jun / 1st Jul

After exams for those that have them, prior to summer holidays, in that dull period so to speak, and far enough away from Orange day to avoid busy weekend flights

Any good for you?

Looking at the other meets from this year
GGF in mid April
Liverpool in early June
Glasgow in late June
Brighton in mid July
Inverness in late July
Chester in late October
Karmageddon in early December

So late August looks perfect...

But as Darren mentioned, that's school holiday time, peak family holiday time and therefore an expensive time for flights and ferries...Posted Image

Feb? (Although, would clash with FAB FEB if that happens again...)

September?

Both times that will avoid peak times and probably have cheap flights?

Second week of September?
I would say first week but it's my wedding anniversary on the 4th :D

[Edit] just had a quick look at Aer Lingus. (Ryanair don't have schedules up yet) Leaving Heathrow on the 8th Sept and back on the 9th, fares range from £1 out/£5 back to £29 out/£39 back each way per person, plus taxes etc, depending on flight time

I'd like FAB FEB to happen again next year!
Last year's was good!
(Edit to say that for those of you who don't know, FAB FEB was a meet in Birmingham, the first weekend in February. It is even an acronymn: Fun Around Birmingham For Every Body) (Copyright Simon Bishop!)

Hmmmm, better start putting some feelers out . . .

Anyway, back to Dublin . . . How about early March? flights would be cheap-ish and the city wouldn't be too crowded, so easier to find accomodation . . .

OK...let's talk numbers.
Apart from the mahoosive meets like Karmageddon and GGF, how many people would you expect at a two-day meet?
There have been 21 expressions of interest on this thread.
There are 64 Joinees in Ireland according to the directory - say 20% come along - 13 people
Plus randoms that might join in, especially as I want to speak to some people in the media who I reckon would love it.

Say a total of 50? Would that count as a big meet or a little meet or somewhere in between?

Hmm...56 would be perfect as that's two loads for the Splash Tour (28 to a boat)

Flights and Ferries can generally be found pretty cheap if you book them early enough in advance. I normally fly to Luton from Dublin return for about £40-£50 and that's normally a Friday night flight and a Sunday afternoon one back. Ferry cost me about £50 from Hollyhead with a car. If you get the seacat it will get you in to one of Dublin's too main ports in about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

I haven't seen large increases in charges for flights when I've been lookign to fly but I could have been lucky.

I'd like to send an invitational e-mail to all the Irish Joinees in the directory...is that allowed?
And Danny, if you're reading this, will you come too? Maybe you could do some media?

After seeing the fantastic time had by all at K4...Dublin will definitely happen!
It's almost certainly going to be the 8th/9th September but I'll have to check and make sure there's no big sporting events going on that might clash with us (I don't think there will be...)

So any ideas for a good name? 'Danny Boy' is obviously begging to be used in some way

Proposed itinerary is:
More pub or gig or something like that
Retire to chambers at about 2am (this *is* Dublin don't forget )

Sunday
Viking Splash tour about 12 o'clock
Leave for home about 3 o'clock-ish

Can't believe I've only jsut seen this...but this is TOTALLY a reason for me to finally sort out my passport.

8/9 september would be fine for us I'm almost certain.
The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is to high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.

You don't HAVE to have a passport!
A valid Photo ID (eg new style driving licence) should do.
But check with individual airlines/ferry companies...
