Hello!

Last May, I took part in the Lloyd's Register 24 Peaks Challenge - a two day walk in the Lake District Covering 24 Peaks in 24 Hours. Pics of the event can be found HERE.

I'm planning on doing this again next July, however before I signed up to go with work again I thought I'd see if there was any legs (no pun intended) in getting a Join Me team together?

The even I'm looking at is for the National Deaf Children's Society and is held over the weekend of the 14th & 15th July 2007. Details can be found HERE.

As you can see there is a £5,000 minimum sponsorship to be raised - which is one reason why I'm making overtures about this so early.

The other reason is that the event requires significant preparation and training. The 24 Peaks is regarded as being tougher than the 3 Peaks Challenge (Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24h). It is certainly no pleasant walk in the country. As an example, we started with six team members on the first day - by the end of the event we were down to three, the others succumbing to various injuries which dictated that they could not continue. I cannot underestimate how hard the weekend is on your body and mind!

If you would be SERIOUSLY interested in taking part the team will be made up of six walkers.

We would also require a support driver for transport, tea making and general moral support duties over the course of the weekend (not so much training involved, although you'd be welcome to come along on training events to see what we'll be going through!)

As I said, this is a very tough event, but perhaps the most worthwhile weekend I've ever had!

Any interested parties, please make yourselves known!

Cheers,

Dan.. :ninja:

I would happily be your support driver.

I'd love to do it, but am fully aware that one too many knee injuries when I was a dancer have rendered me incapable of walking down hills for too long (up them is fine, it's just coming down again) so I would let you down.

But i would LOVE to be a part of it.

Do you have to have a licence to drive a minibus, or would we able to do it with a hired SUV of sorts?
The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is to high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.

Never look down on someone unless you're helping them up.

Rah!

I know we've already talked about this Wilf, but I thought I'd hold my hand up publicly too. I'm up for it, but *only* if we can get our arses into gear asap, because we *will* need all the time we can get to prepare, because this is pretty damn scary hardcore stuff!

Still, provided we can do that, I reckon it'd be a *wicked* thing to do.

So - anybody else up to the challenge?

Also having had a quick look at the site, it looks like we might actually need *two* ground crew, not just one. Anybody fancy that?

H.

xx.

PS. I'm also guessing that it will mean a few weekends away for practice stuff, so anyone who was up for it would have to be able to do at least some of those too, probably.

Hmmmmmmmmm, quite possibly! I'll have to have a little think and let you know for sure (if that's ok?), but at the minute I think I might just be up for that.

Yeah! I'd be up for that.
Why not? I used to do 20 mile hikes every year, but it got boring. This will be much more challenging. It can serve as the cherry on the top of the cake that is my recently started get fit again endeavor.

I am definately up for it - I'm game for anything.

However, I suspect that my inexperience is a handicap, and would prevent a more experienced participant from taking part. My longest hike to date is a 12 mile hill walk over the Eildons.

So, I guess I would say I could be a 'reserve' place, but I am more than willing to act as support crew if two are needed.

I'm definitely interested. Done a lot of hiking around that area before and sounds like the kind of challenge I've been looking for. Got my Gold DofE (years ago mind you) and enjoy hiking for fun so should be able to keep up with the pace. One thing worth mentioning is that my navigational skills are ummmm, pap.

I take it the 5 grand is a combined sum?

Need some time to check I can definitely make it but please put me down as a 'maybe' for now and get back to me if you need any more info.

Yes Yes and definitely Yes.

I've applied for the london marathon and will be training for that, if I don't get in via the ballot I'll still be training for the liverpool and manchester half marathons so can work hiking training into that. Would probably be a month or so before I disappear off to japan, would be a brilliant thing to do before I head off on ma travels.

So yep, definitely in.

Just wondering if the people confirmed or considering this (and ground support too for that matter!) are London based? If so, might be be good to meet up for a beer & have a chat?

My biggest problem is very narrow paths next to very steep drops. Hopefully there won't be too many of these

.....and yes, practice walkies are a must.

Go for it Martin, you won't regret it....onece you've finished. Naturally while you're walking there will be a fair amount of regrettage!

You say that, but generally i find that its after the walk that you REALLY start to regret. As long as you keep on going during a long walk you can rid the pain from your mind....its just when you rest your legs for a while and try and get the hell up afterwards :(

I hope it never gets that bad!! :o

I've just read it. None of that really puts me off. As i've said before the only problem i could possibly have is if we are likely to be taking any extreme "might fall down extreme slope if i take one small step to the left" risks. THen i might get boo hoo scared!!

Cool - thanks for the heads up. I need a new pair of boots, because my lovely comfy berghaus suddenly decided to stop being comfy last year, so I got rid. Just used trekking trainers for the Mt. Kinabalu climb/jungle trekking, but need another decent pair of boots if I'm gonna do this thing.

Already got most of the other kit though from other things.

I've had a look at the Karrimoor shoes in Lillywhites/Sports Soccer, and while they're good value, they would be wholly inadequate for the 24 Peaks.

Additionally, Global Challenge (who run the event on bahalf of the charities) have very specific equipment demands, one of which is that all foot wear must have good ankle support.

I'll see if I can dig out the full blurb for next week.

For walking gear i'd recommend a shop called Hawkshead....though the only 2 shops in the south are in Tunbridge Wells and Windsor.

I should point out that I bought the majoroty of my gear from Aldi for the grand sum of £35...

Also, the orgainisers usually strike a deal with an outlet for some sort of discount. Niot surwe which one it will be tho. Last year it was Cotswold Outdoor.

Hmmmn, I think I still have some discount vouchers for Cotswold (although they are one of the more expensive ones anyway) - the Orangutan Foundation gave me them when I signed up to the volunteer programme.

Well I'm rather slow off the mark here, and while I'm not one for hiking I can definately do tea making and ground crew based stuff! I'll book the weekend off if I'm needed. This sounds absolutely brilliant!

....who took 3 hours to find his way from north east london to south east london, and an hour to get home from the local train station!

Would love to be involved in this, but methinks I would be better suited to driving and tea making! Although at the moment there seems to be more support crew than walking team!

Hmmmn, not *actually* true, but I'm sure there'll be plenty of ways to help once we've worked out our fundraising plan (which I'm starting to think through now). I reckon we'll be roping in as many people as possible (at least that's part of the plan!), and I'm pretty sure we could use your talents one way or another-like I said, I have a few ideas. so will have a chat and defo keep you posted on helping opportunities. Thankyou! :D
