The Kindness Offensive

I thought people on the forum might be up for signing this - thank you
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/please-award-the-routemaster-bus-to-the-starting-out-charity/

The Kindness Offensive will use the Routemaster to continue helping dozens of charities and everyday folk around the UK.
They hired a bus for their big Xmas event a few years back, so if they win it, they can ferry all the toys and food that they give away to needy people, and can ferry all their volunteers in one go to these events.
Plus they can extend the work they do beyond the M25 so they can help more people in the UK!

More information is on their website or just down here with some examples of what they have done so far:

TKO hit the headlines in October 2008 for giving away twenty-five tonnes of non-perishable foods to fourteen soup kitchens and drop-in centers across London. Some of the recipients included four branches of the Salvation Army, The Women’s Asylum Seekers Together, and the Muswell Hill Churches Soup Kitchen.

The 'Vinspired Kindness Offensive', (22/12/08), saw them team up with Vinspired and take a 70-strong team of volunteers to help TKO give away over thirty-five tonnes of presents to people across London. They handed out 3,500 hampers and over twelve thousand toys, as well as high-end electrical items and gizmos. They contributed to twelve different charities and community groups the day of the event, including Great Ormond Street Hospital, as well as taking presents door-to-door across London.

In August 2009, staged 'The Everyday Kindness Awards'. The Awards celebrated the everyday acts of random kindness performed by normal warm-hearted members of the public. There were three 'disciplines'; the first involved helping a stranger up some stairs with a heavy bag; the second involved helping a stranger collect a stack of dropped papers; and the third involved offering a lost tourist directions to a landmark.

In August 2009 TKO delivered several hundred toys to children’s Hospitals around London in celebration of Ramadan. A Youtube video entitled ‘Kindness Offensive toy run’ chronicles the giveaway, and has been viewed over 30,000 times world wide.

I have a 7-port USB hub, into which are plugged a Freecom external DVD-RW drive and a Western Digital 1TB external HDD.
I only plug the hub into the computer (HP Mini-note 2133 WinXP) when I need to use one of the drives and when I just had the DVD drive it was fine.
But yesterday was the first time I plugged the hub in with *both* drives connected and weird stuff started happening. I got an error message about a 'Delayed Write - Failed' to F: (the external HDD). Also a load of tweets were missing in Tweet Deck and reappeared when the HDD was unplugged.
Today, it decided to repeatedly crash Chrome and refuse to play any plug-ins, especially Flash. Again, unplugging the external HDD has resolved it. The HDD currently holds a backup copy of my doucuments and programs.
What's it doing and why and how do I stop it? Is the computer trying to read a program from C: and F: at the same time? Or two conflicting programs?

Today was Apple's new iPod release day, yada yada yada. But in amongst all the usual guff and new, slightly smaller iPods, was a little demo of a bit of software now available for newer iPhones/iPd touches. It'll doubtless be mainly used for games, but it's more than a little impressive and is available to take a look at for yourself:

1. Download Epic Citadel from the app store (free)
2. Pick up jaw from floor

Belgium broke my MP3 player

Discuss.

Slightly more detail: Belgium got the last laugh as always, and broke my MP3 player. It's a Creative Zen. I've never ventured into the world of ipods before, but I am not adverse to doing so. My budget is unspecified, if it's something a bit awesome I don't mind spending money on it. I don't have many (any) toys, so this might be my chance.

Having said that, I'm aware there's a new ipod out today. I don't think I really need to be THAT up to date....!

I mainly just want to listen to music that I already have on my computer. A few other fancy features might be nice (I have a old phone with no fancy features, and have no plans to get a fancy features phone anytime soon, so I am currently fancy featureless.)

Anyway, commence the pro/anti Apple bickering..... NOW.

Thank you

Slightly belatedly, a big thank you to the brave band of joinees who made it north for Joinverness this past weekend. It was immense fun as usual, and even more laid back and unplanned than usual, which I think we all felt was a strength! Thanks in particular to James and Marcus, fridgeless this time, for driving such a long way and for my sluice valve sign!

And apologies for not having done a bit more to promote and organise the meet. For various reasons (all good), I've not really spent much time in the Join Me sphere of life, nor in Joinverness planning. I'm not even convinced I'll be around this time next year, or even if there will/should be a Joinverness in the future. That's not to stop people coming up any time they like, but it's hard to predict the future right now (or, frankly, at any point in time, unless you predict it backwards, but then that's not really the future is it?).

Anyway.

Thanks.

I have no money. Told my mum over the phone I wouldn't be able to get her anything for her birthday, and she was fine with it "just another day," as she always puts it. I think this is rather sad. Everyone should enjoy their birthday, especially mums.
I literally have noooo money, but when I did I somehow managed to spend over £500 on dvd's and other expensive guff in hmv.

Idk if you guys have a purehmv rewards card, but I do, and I'm bloody glad I do. I've been saving my points for something super duper special for absolute ages, but my mum deserves a birthday present, so I've traded in my 50000 points for some silly little Elvis Presley film cell montagey thing she's sure to love.

Cheating in online gaming..

Just read this article on the BBC news website and it got me thinking!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/11061244

As someone who has spent possibly an unhealthy amount of time online I think a ban on cheaters isnt a bad thing at all! Most of us take gaming pretty casually however there are people out there who take it seriously and a few who even make a lot of money from it!

In the case of the Modern warfare series of games. the first one became plagued with people flying, and so people looked to modern warfare 2 for salvation only to have "boosters" etc ruining games by hiding in a corner killing eachother over and over just to improve stats. as a result all the hard work they put in to creating a system whereby you can see peoples achievements is largly flawed as many of the people you play hame simply cheated their way to the top!

on a side note. this brings me to the subject of age related games. should children found to be playing 18 games online be banned? In the case of the Playstation network you have to have an account to log on and play online. so it wouldnt be impossible to refuse access for underagers. I'd be totally behind this. the ammount of kids ive found playing games that are too old for them is disturbing. Online its not just the content of the game that is the problem but other older gamers (with no morals) sitting there insulting really young kids using language that is normally reserved for rapists and murderers!

Anyone need any scart cables?

In our house we have nothing that needs a scart cable, but at a conservative estimate we have around four million of the things.

If anyone wants/needs scart cables for anything, let me know and you can have them.

I also have some of those scart boxes for putting multiple scart inputs into a single lead.

I will be dumping them next week...

Is this me or the forum? I have tried it with lots of different people so it's not just certain joinees.

Facebook places

In an effort to beat foursquare at their own game of alerting burglars as to when you're not home and stalkers as to where they can hide in bushes to observe you, Facebook have launched their own idiotic check-in service. Which for all members is turned on by default, and - and here we have the most glorious chunk of stupid I've witnessed in a fair while - it also allows your friends to check you in somewhere whether you're actually there or not. So potentially, a "friend" (a.k.a. anyone you're linked to) could make it look like you'd e.g. gone to a pub when you were supposed to be at work but were home ill, thus skanking up your life good and proper.

Anyway, here's how to turn this particular work of genius off:

Days Out With The Kids Suggestions Please

Hi Guys

Its been ages since I have stopped by how are we all?

I need a favour if possible and I know you lovley people will come up with something

Still got 2 weeks of the school holidays and am looking for something diffrent to do with the kids (William was 7 last week and Abigail 4 1/2) Over the past few school holidays we have pretty much exausted the Central London stuff Science Museum, Natural History Museum, London Zoo, British Museum, London Eye, Aquarium, Tussauds, etc...and the more local stuff to us Hampton Court, Kew Gardens etc etc...
I am looking for something within easy reach of M25 so Surrey, Kent, Essex, Sussex, Hampshire, Buckinghamshire etc...We were looking at Whipsinade Zoo but at £18 each to get in its a bit expensive can anybody help

The Basic Criteria I am looking for

1.Easy reach of M25/M4/A3 (see above) happy to drive 1-2 hours if needed
2.Reasonably priced budget of £40-£50 for 2 adults/2 kids (less if possible)
3.Preferably (Although not essential) with some sort of animals.
4.Suitable for a 7 year old boy and a 4 year old Girl, lots of places we have looked at suit one or the other not both.

Or even better if anybody could point us in the direction of BOGOF or Child Free vouchers for Whipsinade then that would be great too

Thanks So Much , See you all soon
